SEO FOR PLUMBERS

Plumbing has the most expensive clicks in Australian trade search, because every one of them is somebody with water where it should not be. Except the second-biggest search in the trade, which is worth almost nothing.

YOU WILL BE IN GREAT COMPANY

49,500

EVERY MONTH, 49,500 AUSTRALIANS SEARCH FOR A PLUMBER NEAR THEM

49,500 typed “plumber near me” into Google. Another 5,400 wanted a roof plumber and 4,400 needed someone in an emergency.
The three results in the map box take most of them. Good SEO for plumbers is winning that box, and knowing which of the other big numbers are customers and which are people about to fix it themselves.

WHAT ACTUALLY GETS SEARCHED IN AUSTRALIA

These are real numbers, pulled August 2026. Every search on this list is a job a licensed plumber can invoice.
One term is missing from that list, and it is the second-biggest search in the whole trade. “Drain cleaning” gets 12,100 searches a month. “Blocked drain” gets 2,900, and it is worth roughly ten times more per click.
Four words apart, completely different person. One is standing in a hardware aisle choosing between a bottle of drain cleaner and a plunger. The other is watching it come back up through the shower.
WHAT PEOPLE SEARCH
MONTHLY SEARCHES
plumber near me (49,500 searches a month)
roof plumber (5,400)
emergency plumber (4,400)
blocked drain (2,900)
water leak detection (2,400)
gas fitter (1,900)
pipe relining (1,600)

WHAT ACTUALLY DECIDES IT

Nearly fifty thousand searches a month come down to three results in a box, and the jobs worth having sit behind terms most keyword reports rank near the bottom.

It is the same local search work we run across all our Brisbane SEO campaigns, filtered so the DIY searches never make it into the plan.

The map pack

Own the three listings.
Google Business Profile with every service listed individually rather than lumped under “plumber”, service areas that match where you actually drive, and a review process that runs after every job rather than in bursts.
Show up when locals are searching

Your Google Business Profile, suburb pages and local listings built so the person standing in it finds you first.

A website Google wants to rank

Technical fixes and service-focused SEO that make your site easy for Google to understand and trust.

Reviews, rankings and booked jobs

Build your reputation through reviews, with monthly reports tracking rankings and the jobs that came from organic search.

A page per problem

Not a services list.
Nobody searches “plumbing services”. They search the thing that has gone wrong: blocked drain, hot water, burst pipe, gas leak, roof leak. Each of those is a page, written in the words someone would use while standing in it.
A technically sound foundation

Site speed, crawlability, schema markup, and Core Web Vitals sorted so Google can index and trust your site.

The recurring work nobody writes about

Backflow testing renews annually, pipe relining is high-ticket, roof plumbing is its own specialisation. Quieter searches, better margins, almost no competition on the page.

Authority that stacks over time

Backlink building and on-page optimisation that compounds month over month.

SOUND FAMILIAR?

WHY SEO FOR PLUMBERS IS DIFFERENT

Plumbing search does not behave like other trades. Here is where the generic playbook falls over.
✕ THE GENERIC PLAYBOOK

Your second-biggest keyword is not a customer

Volume and intent come apart badly in this trade. A keyword report sorted by search volume will point you straight at thousands of people who were never going to call anyone.
✓ THE DOMINATE WAY

We sort by intent, not by volume

Real Australian search data for your suburbs and services, with the DIY terms stripped out before anyone builds a strategy on them. You get the numbers, including the ones we are telling you to ignore and why.
✕ THE GENERIC PLAYBOOK

Your best jobs arrive at the worst hour

Emergency work is decided in the map pack in the thirty seconds after someone searches, usually on a phone, often at night. That is a technical problem as much as a content one.
✓ THE DOMINATE WAY

Built for the two in the morning call

Tap-to-call on every page, after-hours availability above the fold if you run it, a site that loads on a bad connection, and call tracking so you know which jobs came from search.
✕ THE GENERIC PLAYBOOK

You are treating the year as flat

Most plumbing sites are built as though demand never moves. Blocked drains climb into winter, and they have come in higher than the following summer in every one of the last five years.

✓ THE DOMINATE WAY

We build ahead of the season

The pages that win blocked drains in June get built in March. You cannot rank into a season that has already started, and this is the one part of your trade where the calendar is genuinely predictable.

BLOCKED DRAINS ARE A WINTER BUSINESS

Searches for blocked drains run around 2,650 a month through December. Through June they run about 4,000. Roughly half again, and winter has come in higher than summer in every one of the last five years.

Median monthly searches for “blocked drain” in Australia. Around 2,650 in December, close to 4,000 in June. Median of 2021 to 2024, Google Ads data.
We tested this across five years rather than one, because a single year will show you a spike that is not really there. Blocked drains came in higher in winter than the following summer in five years out of five. Hot water looked like a bigger seasonal swing on the surface, but it only held in three years out of five, so it is not something we would build a plan around.

Which means the plumber ranking for blocked drains in June built those pages in March.

HOW WE DO SEO FOR PLUMBERS

No fluff, no six-month waiting game. We start with the jobs that actually pay and build out from there.
01

We work out which jobs you want

Not “more calls”. Emergency, hot water, blocked drains, gas, roof plumbing, commercial, backflow. A two-van operator chasing after-hours work and a business building a backflow compliance book have almost nothing in common in their plan.
02

We take the map pack

Google Business Profile rebuilt, every service listed individually, service areas matching where you actually drive, and a review process that runs after every job.
03

We build the pages that compound

A page per problem, suburb pages where you genuinely work, and the seasonal content timed to rank before the season rather than during it. Then monthly reporting on booked jobs, including the months it went sideways.

WHAT THIS COSTS

Every other page on this topic dodges this with “it depends on your goals”. Here is a straighter answer.

It depends on how many services you want to rank for, how many suburbs you genuinely cover, whether you want commercial as well as residential, and what state the site and the Google Business Profile are in when we start. A two-van operator is a different job to a business with a commercial contract book and a backflow register. It is the same local search work we do across our Brisbane SEO clients.
What we will not do is quote you a retainer before we have looked. Get in touch and we will look at your suburb, tell you what is realistic, and put a number on it.

FAQS

Got questions? We’ve got the answers.

Movement in 8 to 12 weeks, usually in the map pack because that is the fastest lever. Real change in job volume takes 6 to 12 months. Anyone promising page one in 30 days is either targeting terms nobody searches or about to do something that gets your site penalised.

No, and nobody who says otherwise can either. What you will get is full visibility of what we are doing, what it is producing, and full admin access to every account.

Possibly nothing, but check what the numbers were for. Plumbing has unusually large searches that belong to people doing the job themselves, and they look excellent in a report. Ask what any of it turned into on the phone.

Not plumbing. We have worked with roofers, pest control and trade services businesses where the local search behaves the same way, and we would rather tell you that than dress it up. If you want an agency with a shelf of plumbing case studies, there are specialists who do nothing else.

It is the main thing. Emergency work is decided in the map pack in the thirty seconds after someone searches, and you cannot buy your way into that position at 2am if you have not already built it.

Then the plan looks completely different. Commercial, backflow and compliance searches are lower volume, longer cycle and far less contested, and the content is written for a facilities manager rather than a homeowner. Say so early and we will build for it.

It changes where the click happens, not whether someone with a burst pipe needs a plumber nearby. AI answers pull from sources that are structured, locally trusted and clearly authored, which is the same work that gets you into the map pack.

Rankings decay slowly rather than switching off. Your map pack position and service pages keep working for a while, and they degrade as competitors keep publishing and you do not.
