SEO FOR PAINTERS

“Exterior painting” and “painters brisbane” get exactly the same number of searches a month. One of them is worth about twenty times more than the other, and the difference is a single word.

YOU WILL BE IN GREAT COMPANY

8,100

EVERY MONTH, 8,100 AUSTRALIANS SEARCH FOR PAINTERS NEAR THEM

Another 4,400 search the singular. Two thousand four hundred want painters in Brisbane, and a thousand want them on the Gold Coast.
Every one of those searches has the same thing in common. They are all looking for a person, not a project. That distinction is worth more than anything else on this page.

WHAT ACTUALLY GETS SEARCHED IN AUSTRALIA

These are real numbers, pulled August 2026. Every search on this list is somebody looking for a painter to do the work.
What is not on the list is just as important. “Exterior painting” does the same 2,400 searches a month as “painters brisbane”, and it is worth roughly twenty-two times less per click.
Someone who types “painters” is looking for someone to do it. Someone who types “painting” is usually about to do it themselves. They want a colour, a technique, a price on a tin and a free weekend.

WHAT ACTUALLY DECIDES IT

Twelve and a half thousand monthly searches across the two “near me” variants, and the three results in the map box take most of them.

It is the same local search work we run across all our Brisbane SEO campaigns, pointed only at the searches that end in a quote.

The map pack

Own the three listings.
Google Business Profile with your services listed individually rather than lumped under “painter”, service areas that match where you actually travel, and a review process that runs after every job rather than in bursts before a quiet month.
Show up when locals are searching

Your Google Business Profile, suburb pages and local listings built so the person wanting a quote finds you first.

A website Google wants to rank

Technical fixes and service-focused SEO that make your site easy for Google to understand and trust.

Reviews, rankings and real quotes

Build your reputation through reviews, with monthly reports tracking rankings and the quote requests that came from organic search.

Suburb pages

The searches are already suburb-shaped.
“Painters brisbane” does 2,400 a month and “painters gold coast” does a thousand. That pattern repeats all the way down to suburb level. One page per area you genuinely work in, with real jobs on it, not a template with the name swapped.
A technically sound foundation

Site speed, crawlability, schema markup, and Core Web Vitals sorted so Google can index and trust your site.

Your photos are a ranking asset

Before and after on the suburb and service page it belongs to, properly captioned. Most painters put forty photos in one gallery where they help nothing.

Authority that stacks over time

Backlink building and on-page optimisation that compounds month over month.

SOUND FAMILIAR?

WHY SEO FOR PAINTERS IS DIFFERENT

Painting search does not behave like other trades, and the reason is unusually specific. Here is where the generic playbook falls over.
✕ THE GENERIC PLAYBOOK

Half the obvious keywords are people doing it themselves

No other trade has this problem quite so cleanly. A keyword report sorted by search volume will hand you a list where several of the biggest entries are weekend projects, not customers.
✓ THE DOMINATE WAY

We filter for the person, not the project

Real Australian search data for your suburbs and services, with the do-it-yourself terms stripped out before anyone builds a strategy on them. You get the numbers, including the big ones we are telling you to ignore and why.
✕ THE GENERIC PLAYBOOK

The advice going around is actively wrong

There is guidance on page one of Google right now telling painters to target terms like “interior painting” and “deck staining”. Those are among the cheapest clicks in the trade, and the click price is the market telling you exactly what those searchers are worth.
✓ THE DOMINATE WAY

We show you the price of every click

Before we build anything, you see what advertisers pay for each term. It is the fastest honest signal of whether a search turns into work, and it takes the argument out of it.
✕ THE GENERIC PLAYBOOK

Your best keyword is one nobody targets

“Residential painters” is a small search with the highest click value in the entire trade and very little competition. It only turns up when somebody actually reads the data rather than sorting by volume.
✓ THE DOMINATE WAY

We go looking for those

Small, high-intent, low-competition searches are where a painting business gets cheap wins early, while the bigger suburb terms take longer to move.

“PAINTER” IS A CUSTOMER. “PAINTING” IS A SATURDAY.

Two columns, near enough the same search volumes. One column is people looking for someone to do the work. The other is people about to do it themselves.

Google Ads data, Australia, August 2026. Top row: the same number twice. A click in the left column costs roughly twenty times what a click in the right column costs.
The clearest one is “fence painting”. Nineteen hundred searches a month, one of the most contested terms in the entire trade, and one of the cheapest clicks in it. That is not a market full of people hiring painters. It is a market full of businesses selling paint and gear to people with a free Saturday.

The rule bends twice. “Commercial painting” behaves like a hiring search, because nobody repaints a warehouse themselves. So does “painting quotes”, because the word quotes gives away what they actually want. The real question is not the word. It is whether the search implies somebody else is doing the work, and “painter” is just the fastest way to spot it.

HOW WE DO SEO FOR PAINTERS

No fluff, no six-month waiting game. We start with the work you actually want and filter out the weekend projects.
01

We work out which work you want

Not “more leads”. Interior repaints, exterior, new builds, commercial, strata. A two-person residential crew and a business chasing body corporate contracts have almost nothing in common in their plan.
02

We take the map pack

Google Business Profile rebuilt, services listed individually, service areas matching where you actually travel, and a review process that runs after every job.
03

We build the pages that compound

Suburb pages where you genuinely work, service pages for the jobs worth having, and your own job photography put where it can rank. Then monthly reporting on quote requests, including the months it went sideways.

WHAT THIS COSTS

Every other page on this topic dodges this with “it depends on your goals”. Here is a straighter answer.

It depends on how many suburbs you genuinely cover, whether you want commercial and strata as well as residential, and what state the site and the Google Business Profile are in when we start. A two-person crew in four suburbs is a different job to a business tendering for body corporate contracts. It is the same local search work we do across our Brisbane SEO clients.
What we will not do is quote you a retainer before we have looked. Get in touch and we will look at your suburb, tell you what is realistic, and put a number on it.

FAQS

Got questions? We’ve got the answers.

Movement in 8 to 12 weeks, usually in the map pack because that is the fastest lever. Real change in quote volume takes 6 to 12 months. Anyone promising page one in 30 days is either targeting terms nobody searches or about to do something that gets your site penalised.

No, and nobody who says otherwise can either. What you will get is full visibility of what we are doing, what it is producing, and full admin access to every account.

Probably, unless it was bringing in quotes. It is a real search with real volume, and most of the people typing it are researching a job they intend to do themselves. Worth checking what any of that traffic actually turned into on the phone.

Not painting. We have worked with roofers, pest control and trade services businesses where the local search behaves the same way, and we would rather tell you that than dress it up. If you want an agency with a shelf of painting case studies, there are specialists who do nothing else.

Then the quickest win is usually making sure you turn up properly when someone googles your business name after a referral, and that your suburb pages exist at all. Both are fast.

Then the plan looks completely different. Those searches are smaller, less contested, and written for a facilities manager rather than a homeowner. Say so early and we will build for it.

It changes where the click happens, not whether someone needs their house painted. AI answers pull from sources that are structured, locally trusted and clearly authored, which is the same work that gets you into the map pack.

Rankings decay slowly rather than switching off. Your map pack position and suburb pages keep working for a while, and they degrade as competitors keep publishing and you do not.
